Fermentation products let us make many things. They range from basic nutrients (probiotics, collagen) to high-end drugs (insulin, semaglutide). This method uses bacteria, fungi, and engineered strains.

一、Probiotics
These are live microbes from fermentation culture (≥10⁶ CFU/g/mL). You take the right amount. They help the host’s gut microbe balance.
Strains: Lactic acid bacteria (e.g., Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium), yeasts (e.g., Saccharomyces boulardii), Bacillus species (e.g., Bacillus subtilis), and more.
二、Collagen
Microbial fermentation makes animal-free collagen copies or recombinant collagen. This removes the risk of animal viruses.
Strains: Engineered strains (e.g., Escherichia coli, Pichia pastoris). These strains have human or animal collagen genes.
Direct fermentation: Lactic acid bacteria or yeasts make collagenase. This enzyme breaks down fish skin/bone collagen into small peptides (not whole collagen).New! Recombinant collagen — a huge market. It is set to grow in 2025.
三、Bacillus subtilis
These are fermentation products from Bacillus subtilis. They are good for making enzymes. They are good for fighting germs. They are good for helping growth.
Strains: Wild or engineered Bacillus subtilis strains (e.g., strains that make α-amylase or protease).
四、Biofertilizers
These fertilizers come from growing functional microbes by fermentation. They use live bacteria or their waste products. They help plants grow.Microbial inoculants (pure fermentation products): nitrogen-fixing bacteria (rhizobia), phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (Pseudomonas), potassium-solubilizing bacteria (Bacillus mucilaginosus), mycorrhizal fungi, and more.Bio-organic fertilizers (mix of microbes and organic fertilizer).

五、Insulin
This is a glucose-lowering hormone. It comes from engineered microbial fermentation. It treats diabetes.Escherichia coli: It makes the human proinsulin gene. Then we refold the inclusion body. We cut it with enzymes. We get insulin.Yeast (e.g., Saccharomyces cerevisiae): It releases insulin. This avoids inclusion body refolding. It makes purification simpler.
六、Semaglutide
This is a GLP1 receptor agonist. It is a fermented peptide drug. It controls blood sugar. It manages weight.Strain: Escherichia coli. It makes a fusion protein with the semaglutide gene.
七、Astaxanthin
This is a fat-soluble carotenoid. It is made by microbial fermentation. It is one of the strongest natural antioxidants (6,000 times stronger than vitamin C).Phaffia rhodozyma: It uses heterotrophic fermentation. Glucose is the carbon source. Betaine is added. 八、Pullulan
This is a water-soluble extracellular polysaccharide. It is made by fermenting Aureobasidium pullulans. It forms films well. It sticks well.Strain: Aureobasidium pullulans (high-yield strains like ATCC 32092 are best).
